One of the most important tools you want to have in your garden is a water hose. And you’re going to need a reel for the hose. Well, you don’t really “need” it, but it’s advisable that you get one because the convenience it provides is going to make you happy-clappy.
So that is why we put together this list. The objective is to help you discover the best wall mounted garden hose reel, so that you can really enjoy tending your little Eden while smiling ear to ear.
For us, the joy factor takes a nosedive each time we have to untangle a knotted hose and roll up the wet, dirty thing by hand. Don’t get us wrong, we absolutely love gardening. It is such a fun and highly fulfilling activity.
We can spend all day in our garden slogging it off and get all muddy and messy in the process. It doesn’t matter just as long as our veggie beds, flowers and various plants look tiptop.
However, without a decent hose reel to help us manage the hose? Well, things can pretty annoying real quick.
It’s a chore to roll up the hose each time for crying out loud! Sure we could leave the thing coiling on the ground, but that’s certainly not a good idea.
The kids could trip over it, it could get ruined, it clutters our pretty little garden, squirrels might take a bath with it and wasting our water bill, etc.
Reviewing the Best Wall Mounted Garden Hose Reels of 2020
There are lots of cheap mounted reels ($10 – $20) you can find on the net or at the stores, though you really should avoid them because they are a complete waste of money.
We’ve had our share of issues with the reliability of cheap reels. The most common issue with those reels is…okay take a guess, please… Ah, yes! You guessed correctly! Poor durability it is. Most only lasted a few short months.
The ones listed below are real high quality stuff, but you’re going to have to spend a little more cash in order to enjoy their reliability. Still, they are not that expensive.
We came across a $300 wall mounted heavy duty hose reel a while back. Now THAT is seriously expensive!
We don’t know about you guys, but whoa…at that price tag, we expect it to be able to control a garden hose and water our plants automatically. In addition, we expect it to possess an anti-burglar function with the capability to utilize the hose to wring the neck of anyone who trespasses on our property. Sadly, it couldn’t do these things.
Anyway, here’s a quick list for you to easily check out some best wall mounted garden hose reels ever made.

Now let’s go over a little about each…
(1) Gardena 82-Feet Retractable Hose Reel With Hose Guide
Our avid gardener buddy Shawn has been a fan of retractable hoses since he first received one for his birthday many years ago. He now owns this Gardenia model and he describes it as “the only hose reel that matters.”
Well, we wouldn’t go that far but indeed, this wall mounted retractable reel is a winner. It’s practical in design, with couplings that can be connected real fast, ultra smooth auto-retraction, and the ability to swivel 180 degrees.
The reel’s housing is composed of plastic, but it’s not the shoddy kind of plastic material. Durability-wise, this thing is built like a brick wall and leakage is non-existent.
No wonder we came across a lot of reviews praising its quality construction, particularly with regards to how durable it is. The swivel feature is excellent and its one of the strengths of this reel.
Some retractable garden reels lack swiveling mechanism and this makes it hard for the user to move around the garden. Since the Gardena 82-Feet reel has this mechanism built-in and it works amazingly smooth, you won’t experience that problem.
As one of the most recognized brands in garden tools, Gardena designed this reel close to perfection. The auto-retraction works perfectly as the mechanism is able to reel in every inch of the hose, and does so at a speed that’s quick yet acceptably safe.
Ever tried using a retractable reel that rewinds the hose at such a speedy rate, you fear you might get whipped? We have.
Using a reel like that—although getting hurt is not very likely—can be a little scary. The rewind ability of this hose is as we said, perfect.
Because the hose is kept exclusively in the reel’s plastic housing—which looks kind of futuristic by the way—the Gardena 82-Feet reel is most suitable for garden guys and girls who dislike getting their hands dirty wrangling and rolling up a garden hose the old fashioned way.
Literally your hands won’t get dirty at all. This is a huge plus in our book. The hose itself is very light so you shouldn’t experience any issues maneuvering around the garden or yard with it.
However, it is smaller compared to your regular, old fashioned hose. Due to the smaller diameter, the water pressure lacks some juice so to speak.
It’s good enough, and obviously the smaller diameter is necessary in order to compensate the benefit of not having to handle a dirty hose. Still, a flaw’s a flaw. A little stronger water pressure would’ve been really nice.
Although the reel has kind of a futuristic look to it, it isn’t complicated to install. Hooking it up was way too easy and the package comes with a hose guide, thus making the whole mounting process a real breezy affair.
When it comes to installation, the upsetting part is that the package does not include a T-20 torx bit or a T-20 torx screwdriver. The T-20 torx bit is crucial to complete the mounting process. Without one, you won’t be able to mount the reel to your wall.
Those two flaws aside, the Gardena 82-Feet reel is still an engineering masterpiece that will far exceed most yard or garden owners’ expectations.
- The mounted hose reel is durable and easy to install
- No leakage
- No rusting issue since the housing is made of tough plastic
- Hose stays in the housing so no messing around with a dirty hose
- Highly smooth and safe auto-retraction
- Advantageous 180-degree swiveling mechanism results in excellent maneuverability around the garden or yard
- Hose guide included
- Smaller diameter hose means water pressure lacks a bit of strength
- T-20 torx bit which is necessary for mounting isn’t supplied
(2) Strongway Parallel or Perpendicular Wall Mounted Garden Hose Reel (7-Year)
In terms of appearance, it almost look like a clone of the Eley wall mounted heavy duty hose reel (#5 on this list), though the Strongway reel is solid enough in its own right.
It also has that unbelievably tough construction, though it’s actually made out of an entirely different material. Instead of aluminum like the Eley reel, Strongway’s offering is built of steel that has been powder-coated for additional longevity.
The steel construction can be a problem however because prolong exposure to the elements from outdoors may very well lead to rust. As far as durability goes that’s the only worrying bit, this model is the garden hose reel folks who have wasted money on crappy, plastic junk reels dreamed of.
Installation is laughably easy since there are only 4 bolts for hooking the thing up. This also means it is easy to uninstall, so you can bring it inside your home in case you’re very concerned about exposing the steel constructed reel to outside elements for an extended period of time, or because of the winter season which can cause frost damage.
It’s nice that the reel can be fastened to the wall either in parallel or perpendicular position. Plus switching from one another can be done relatively swiftly. To prevent the reel from spinning too much, there’s a pin which you can use to put a stop to the spinning.
The Strongway reel can hold 100 feet of 3/4″ and 150 feet of 5/8” of hose. Sure, the price tag is kind of high, but since you’re interested in the best wall mounted garden hose reel, this is well worth the price.
- Very durable
- Can be mounted parallel or perpendicular
- Easy to install and uninstall
- Convenient stop pin keep the reel from spinning all the way
- Steel constructions means it is susceptible to rust
(3) Hozelock 65-Feet Water Hose with Retractable Powerful Reel (2-Year)
The Gardena 82-Feet garden hose reel blew most auto-retractable reels clear out of the water with its remarkably smooth auto-retraction ability and convenient 180-degree swivel mechanism.
Obviously it would be very challenging for a competing auto-retractable hose reel to rival such outstanding features. If you lack the extra funds to purchase Gardena’s offering, then consider getting Hozelock 65-Feet reel instead—that is if you’re in the market for an auto-retractable garden hose reel that can be mounted to a wall.
Like the Gardena, this one also has a 180-degree swivel feature for optimal maneuverability around the garden or yard.
Construction is good. The housing is plastic and so is the included wall bracket. We stumbled across a number of reviews claiming that the reel is prone to leakage, but so far we’ve experienced no such issue (about 8 months since purchase).
Fortunately, the reel is backed by a 2-year guarantee. If you want to be even more fortunate, register your purchase online and the guarantee will be extended to 5 years (offer available at time of writing).
You’ll be happy to know that the reel can be taken off its wall bracket with ease and this is especially useful for winter storage. If that isn’t enough, an anti-theft feature is built into the bracket.
Basically, you can put a padlock underneath and this should keep thieves from getting their grubby hands on your precious Hozelock 65-Feet wall mounted reel.
The rewind/unwind mechanism is well made but its auto-lock function isn’t perfect. The hose can be locked in position in two different ways.
First there’s the safety lock. This one is necessary in order to prevent the hose from being pulled out when being completely rewound. It is also meant to prevent the hose from rewinding accidentally.
So to use the hose, first you have to deactivate the safety lock and then pull out the hose. For every meter or 3.3 feet of hose you pull out, the reel will make 4 clicking sounds.
The 4 click locks the hose in position—let’s call it auto-clicking lock—and this is the second way of locking. Now you can water away your plants. To be safe, you can head back to the reel to activate the safety lock.
If you require additional length of hose, go back and deactivate the safety lock. Hold the end of the hose and walk about until you pull out the desired length. Keep in mind that you don’t always have to go back and activate and deactivate the safety lock.
Once the hose is locked in position after the 4th click and you require the extra length to cover other areas, just pull the hose a bit and that will unlock the auto-clicking lock.
The auto-clicking lock isn’t perfect because it doesn’t always work consistently. Sometimes we have to rewind and unwind a few times before it activates the clicking lock.
Also, the hose kinks from time to time so you need to straighten it out or water won’t flow out—obviously. And speaking of water, this hose also suffers from less than optimal water pressure due to its smaller diameter—just like the Gardena model.
The rewind/unwind works fast and smooth though and the unit is also easy to assemble. It’s cheaper than the Gardena, but we prefer the latter as the overall quality is better.
Even so, those who loathe having to rewind over 60 feet of hose by hand and lack the cash to purchase the Gardena model should appreciate this well-made offering by Hozelock.
- Responsive 180-degree swivel action
- Solid construction including the wall bracket
- Extremely easy to remove from wall bracket
- Easy to install
- Padlock feature for theft prevention
- Smooth rewind/unwind mechanism
- Hose kinks occasionally
- Auto-clicking lock feature is sometimes a hit-or-miss which can get annoying
(4) Liberty Garden Products Single Arm Navigator Multi-Directional Hose Reel
This fairly obscure wall mounted garden hose reel is decently built, arriving in 5 parts which include a basket, a crank handle, hose reel, leader hose, and swing arm.
As you might expect, an Allen wrench is supplied together with the necessary hardware assembly components like a couple of Allen bolts, a single Allen screw, and a couple of lock nuts.
You want to fasten the reel to either a masonry wall or to wall studs, though regrettably, the shipment does not come with mounting hardware.
So if you do plan on buying this hose reel, please be aware you’ll need to purchase anchor sleeve, lock washer, nut, washer and 5/16” x 2 1/2” masonry wall anchor—a couple of each item.
These items are essential if you wish to attach this heavy duty hose reel via anchor sleeves. A simpler mounting method can be done using masonry screws.
For this method, you’ll need just a couple of 5/16” x 2 1/2” masonry screws as well as a couple of washers. Of course you can mount it to solid wooden wall studs, which means 5/16” x 2 1/2” wood screws plus two washers are needed.
The assembly procedure of this wall mounted hose reel is really simple and took a little more than 15 minutes to complete. Mounting was just as easy and almost as quick.
With the mounting hardware components gathered, all you’ll need is an adjustable wrench, a hammer drill, and a pair of pliers. You’ll probably get the job done within 30 minutes.
The reel is very strong as it’s made out of steel with powder coat finish. Winding the hose is a cinch thanks to the reel’s highly responsive crank handle.
In addition, the reel offers a complete 360-degree rotation, providing you significant ease when unwinding your hose. The basket is a nice addition to the whole package.
Some gardening tools fit nicely into the basket. So far, our only grouse is that its steel construction is bound to attract rust.
It’s not faultless, but this wall mounted multi-directional hose reel is genuinely good and it has a kind of classic elegant look to it.
- Simple to assemble and mount
- Sturdy construction
- Smooth crank handle
- Good 360-degree rotation feature
- The basket is a nice bonus
- Made of steel so becoming rusty is a problem
- Mounting hardware not provided
(5) Eley/Rapid Reel Wall Mount Garden Hose Reel Model 1041 (10-year)
As one the most popular heavy duty hose reels and arguably the most durable in the market, the Eley model 1041 should please those who are sick and tired of buying cheap, plastic reels that often fall apart within a short period of use.
Due to its impressive quality construction, people have been raving on and on about its durability. Is it really that durable? Yep, you bet!
You see, this reel is composed mainly of top-notch durably cast aluminum. Plastic components are present in the form of the reel’s cam brake as well as the handle.
The rest are simply cutting edge solid stuff. Those plastic components are durable too. They are pretty tough and seem to be holding up well.
Like many top-of-the-line products that require a little assembly, the Rapid Reel 1041 comes packed with an Allen wrench. Heck, the wrench itself feels incredibly solid. With the provided wrench in hand, you’ll no doubt have a breeze of a time putting this reel together.
Sure, a good quality Allen wrench on its own won’t amount to anything, if the reel itself is difficult to assemble and install. Fortunately–especially for us with poor DIY skills—the 1041 reel is a piece of basic vanilla cake to piece together as well as install.
The instructions couldn’t be any easier and clearer. Around 20 minutes were all it took to get this beast of a reel ready for our hose.
All the necessary mounting items are included in the box. You’ll find metal masonry anchor bolts so you can mount the reel to a stonework wall.
If you want it mounted into studs, sure go ahead. The proper screws are provided so you can definitely do that. In addition, you can install the 1041 so that the hose can be reeled in or unreeled perpendicular or parallel to your home wall.
The 1041 reel has a standout reel rotation capability. It does its reeling work very silently, unlike other models we’ve used in the past which were a little noisy.
The rotation is pleasantly smooth, with a handy locking feature meant to keep it from spinning any further. The handle turns very easily too. We can’t emphasize it enough…the reeling/unreeling is super smooth.
What about leakage at the connections? What about rust? With its no-leak construction and non-rusting aluminum body, there’s nothing to criticize here.
The criticism goes to the lack of hose guide. If this wall mounted garden hose reel had a hose guide, it would have been flawless.
- Extremely durable
- Extremely smooth reeling/unreeling
- Easy to assemble and install
- Reliable mounting hardware
- No leakage
- No rust due to aluminum construction
- No hose guide
Should You Really Break Out Your Wallet for a Wall Mounted Garden Hose Reel?
A mounted hose reel isn’t something you see in every garden. Some people are just not interested in getting one. For hardcore green thumbs though, this gardening tool is virtually a must-have.
You might want to fork out the money and grab one too, especially if you plan on spending a substantial amount of time tending your garden.
Understanding a reel’s mechanism isn’t so difficult. This is what gardeners use to keep hoses neatly rolled up when they are done watering for the day. Some people think that buying a hose reel is a waste of money.
Rather than buy one, they much prefer to simply gather up their hose in a bundle and drape it over the garden tap, or just toss it in the garage. Such approach can be exhausting and not to mention messy.
Moreover, chances are high that you may end up damaging the hose if it isn’t stored properly. A reel can offer added longevity to your hose as it can keep it in tip-top shape. Plus it keeps your hands clean too.
Options to Pick
Hose reels can be differentiated according to a number of different qualities. A reel can be made of plastic, steel or aluminum. Although some say that plastic is a less sturdy choice, garden hose reels made of high-grade plastic material should have a pretty decent lifespan.
High-grade plastic won’t buckle easily even with extensive use and under harsh weather conditions. Plastic ones might serve you well if you aren’t into daily hour-long gardening sessions.
Steel however might be a better choice, but tend to be susceptible to rust. Aluminum heavy duty hose reel is most recommended, particularly if you are every bit a gardening fanatic.
Not all wall mounted garden hose reel can be hooked up to a wall exclusively. Some models can even be attached to a cart. In other words, those models have a 2-in-1 setup—you can take the reel off the wall and set it on carts instead.
Reels that connect to walls are ideal for small gardens since they don’t require tremendous hose coverage. For large-size gardens however, the cart type is the most ideal choice.
Whatever your garden size is, if you prefer to wheel your reel and hose around, then get a cart model. Wall mounted reels can further differ according to the direction in which they release hoses. A hose can be released perpendicular to the wall or parallel to it.
Your choice would depend on your specific need. A parallel release would be necessary if you need to hose down an area directly underneath the mounted reel.
Good thing that a number of models presented on this best wall mounted garden hose reels list possess the versatility to be mounted either perpendicular, or parallel to the wall.
Finally, reels differ according to the rewind mechanism. A cheap, traditional reel usually has a manually operated mechanism. Other models such as the Gardena and the Hozelock, offer a real handy automatic rewind feature.
To make this feature work, the user has to disengage the auto-rewind lock, release the hose and it will retract quickly. Because of this feature, automatic reels are generally pricier than the manual models.
Making Your Choice
Once you’ve figured out what you need and want in a garden hose reel, selecting the right type is no issue at all. But when it comes to picking a specific brand, now that is another story entirely.
Different brand names will of course compete for your attention and cash. The way forward here is to get a reel created by a brand that’s renowned for producing top-quality gardening tools and equipment.
If you’re all fuzzy when it comes to brand names that put out quality gardening tools, and you really want a good mounted model, then check out one of the choices presented above.
The best wall mounted hose reel can help improve your gardening experience. This is why it pays to make the right choice.
